“Fire Insurance Maps: The Google Maps of their Day”

Presented by: Jill Morelli

In the mid-1800s and early 1900s, some of the most informative maps were fire insurance maps. At the time, fire insurance maps were developed not for the individual to find their way in the world, but rather to assist insurance companies to quantify their risk. Today, those maps provide that “street view” of our ancestor’s built environment at the turn of the last century. We will explore the genesis of the maps, how they evolved over time, how to find them and how to read them. Your ancestors’ name may not be on these maps, but you will gain a greater understanding of their lives by exploring these maps!
