SOCCGS Announcements for January 2022
Appointments Required to Enter Mission Viejo Library Beginning January 6th
To lessen the effects of the current COVID-19 surge, the Mission Viejo Library is implementing strategies to manage the number of people in the facility and allow increased distancing to prevent spread. Beginning Thursday, January 6, an appointment will be required to enter the library, and the Friends of the Library Bookstore will be temporarily closed. Our Genealogy Research Center will continue to be open, but you must make a library appointment to enter the building. Library appointments can be made here: https://cmvl.as.me/schedule.php
If you would like to use our genealogy computers during your visit, please make a separate computer reservation to be sure one is available for you. Genealogy computer reservations can be made here: https://collecting404s.com/computer-reservations/
The Mission Viejo Library is hopeful these measures will only be in place for two to three weeks but is actively monitoring the situation and will adjust as needed. Beginning Genealogy
We are thrilled to bring back our introductory class – Beginning Genealogy!
Starting in 2022, join us on the 3rd Thursday of the month in January, April, July, October! See the list of Evening Classes to register!
2022 is a notable year for genealogists everywhere due to the upcoming release of the 1950 U.S. Census. For this class, we’ll gather online via Zoom, and cover critical elements that will help you as you embark upon your genealogical journey. No prior experience is required, just be sure to register for the month of your preference before spaces are filled! Class is offered 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM.
The SOCCGS Genealogy Research Center is OPEN!
The SOCCGS Genealogy Research Center is open, and Docents are on duty (Times Docents are available) to help you with your genealogy research.
We expect that many of you will be eager to access those locked records on FamilySearch and our other databases, which we haven’t been able to use for the last year. To avoid long waits to use the computers, we have set up an online appointment system for our two genealogy computers.
To make an appointment for our genealogy computers, go to https://collecting404s.com/computer-reservations/ or click on the drop-down menu for the Research Center from the black menu bar at the top of our website, and then choose Computer Reservations.
Membership
As temperatures begin to cool just a bit, our thoughts turn to fall, friends, football, and family. Consider the joy of sharing family stories and finding new family members when you give the gift of a membership in our Society. Let your friends and relatives discover for themselves the thrill of connecting with other genealogists, attending our Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings, and gleaning new knowledge from our guest speakers at our monthly general meetings. You’re just a few clicks away from giving a unique and very thoughtful gift. Whether you use on-line payment through our PayPal feature or download, print out, and mail a membership application, your membership will be confirmed promptly by our Membership Chair Lynn Souers. “We’re thrilled to welcome new members and appreciate the enthusiasm of new genealogists,” comments Lynn. “This really is a unique gift and a great way to celebrate families.”
For only $25/year ($30 joint membership) you will continue to receive access to our general meetings, guest speakers, and SIG’S plus our information-packed newsletter. That works out to $2.08 a month! What a great bargain!
